    This Yaesu radio has a design that is far superior to ICOM. Its design is very, very beautiful; it looks professional and elegant in a living room. On the other hand, the 7300 has a slightly inferior design. However, it is much more intuitive, much more enjoyable to use, and much more pleasant overall. I will add handles to the ICOM 7300, which will give it a professional and engineer-researcher style. Both radios are similar in reception and transmission for DX.

    • @julianrose4741
      @julianrose4741 День назад

      Yes, the Yaesu is more beautiful. We like radios that look beautiful. The circuit design in the Yaesu is older though. It is a mixer SDR. Although this results in good RX "numbers" it radio comes with several problems. #1 problem is that the receiver audio frequency passband is not flat. The bass and treble are lost at the top and bottom. The next is that the display has no averaging. It is like a strobe light show. Next is the buttons on the left of the VFO knob. You ALWAYS hit the VFO knob when you try to press those buttons. Next is the Transmit adjustments. The AMC control must be at 100 to take it OUT of line- else you can never adjust your audio and ALC like the manual says. Receive and Transmit audio are superior on the Icom. DNR is superior on the Yaesu.

    Great review. I watched your review of the Flex 3000 several years ago and it was the deciding factor in my buying one. Your reviews are informative and you present the information very nicely. I have a Radio Shack HTX-10 but it is noisy and missing a knob or two. Might just pick up one of these for some summertime fun!

    I would like to add a couple of points to what he has done so well. He forgot to mention the Icom's multimeter that allows you to see all your meter settings at once which I have on my Icom IC-7100 as well and it is really important running digital modes to monitor your power output, ALC and SWR with the constant TX and RX of the FT-8. I do love the Icom's menu system which is easier to see where you are going. I used to have the Yaesu FT-710 and in the beginning I did not like the menu system. However, after using it for a month or so I realized something. When you click on the menu of the Icom you get all the icons but no information. However, when you click on the menu for the Yaesu you get their boring list, but all of them show you the current settings at a glance which is a good thing and you don't have to actually go in any deeper to see where things are set. That is very nice as well. To bad we could not have a radio and the better features of each radio. Maybe some day. I think it comes down to what you want out of your radio and how you plan on using it. Also, the Icom had the presets for FT-8 long before the Yaesu did. I used FT-8 on my Icom 7300 and never had any problems and it is a breeze to set up. On my FT-710 I frequently lost connection and could not tell when I wasn't actually transmitting. That is why I like the Icom multimeter. Maybe Yaesu could do something similar. Thanks for posting and I always love your videos. 73's and hope to hear some of yall on field day tomorrow.

    As an old Kenwood TS-940 user I was leaning towards an 890 but that 7610 dual receive is a show stopper.

    • @Yavor54
      @Yavor54 5 дней назад

      The real deal-breaker on the 890 is the speed of spectrum display refresh. It is super-slow. Not acceptable. When you have a real-time fast refresh rate display, you cannot put up with slow displays anymore. We are talking 30 FPS on the 7610 and maybe 4 FPS on the 890. I've owned and reviewed ALL the top radios....and they are all sold and the 7610 remains. (TS-990s, FTdx-101D, IC-7851 etc) Even the Elecraft K4 which uses the same ADC sampling chips as the 7610- ships with only one ADC receive channel, no antenna tuner and is $2000 more.

      @nyworker 5 дней назад

      @@Yavor54 Yes, 7610 seems to offer more performance from the visual pov. 890 would be a great upgrade and successor to my 940 but heck I will keep the 940 for tradition and add the 7610!

    C’mon people, You cannot compare the 7300 to the DX10. Two completely different radios. Although I hate ICOM it just isn’t fair…. I would compare the 991a to the 7300 and the 991a would still win. Of course all My opinion… any items that are missing from the 991a can be done via your PC via the audio in/out ports on the sound card.

    • @Yavor54
      @Yavor54 5 дней назад

      Well, I did it before the 710 came out- which is an exact comparison. Sales numbers of the 7300 are over 65,000 now. Sure, the 10 is a better radio and costs more. That said, brand loyalty has a big part in people's choices. The 10 has plenty of warts...and cool features. The 7300 will be the most popular radio of this decade for good reason. It performs past it's price point.

    • @KH07734
      @KH07734 4 дня назад

      @@Yavor54 I must disagree with you on the 7300 being the most popular radio of the decade as I have no need for it nor did I like it at all before I even discovered Yaesu. I actually chose the Alinco SR DX9 over the 7300 and then bought the Yaesus.

    • @KH07734
      @KH07734 4 дня назад

      @@Yavor54 this can go down the rabbit hole, I will agree to disagree since the Yaesu 991a and DX-10 are clearly better radios although I will throw you the 710 since that should have been a DX-10 with VHF/UHF in my opinion.

    I am a handy man and have a basic soldering kit, but I am not sure I have what it takes to put this together. I don’t have a radio license and have been learning CW for a couple of months, and want to get better at copy and consistently writing correct code. But, I don’t have a license and I am wondering if it is ok to get a radio and listen to it, or use something like this as a practice device. Can I practice sending without broadcasting, just for the oscillator?

    You guys are missing a very important fact with regards to the ftdx10. Ask yourself this, how does the ftdx10 produce a a wideband scope, given it has 3 roofing filters preceding a mixer? Think about it. Actually, if you check out the block diagram of the ftdx10 you will notice it deploys 2 adc's, one for the band scope and the other for roofing filter, the dsp then calculates the antenna noise floor with the roofing filter resulting in much lower noise floor over the ft710. Yaesu engineers aren't that stupid after all. Cheers Darren

    Thanks for this video. A couple comments: I listened several times through each receiver demonstration and I could tell zero advantages towards the 7851. This is pretty common from testing I've done as well on the bands in the real world with various radios. All the sensitivity in the world means very little on HF when were most often noise limited, or maybe more accurately, interference limited. I good directional antenna can be more helpful sometimes! I was hoping to see how the 7851 was better dealing with that with its selectivity, but didn't really see that here. I even preferred the 7610's CW filtering and sound over what I heard, as did you I believe. I have made a career field testing of various types of radios in live conditions over the decades and have seen in most cases, the highest rated receivers in the lab don't really make all that much difference in the real world, and some actually fall short for various reasons (some you alluded to). I do own a 7610 now, and have for a couple years. I have a few contests and Field Days under my belt with it, and agree 100% about the Digi-Sel tracking bandpass filters being absolutely crucial in a multi-multi environment. Tremendous difference to the point the other stations' desense from other bands is completely mitigated. I also own a Flex, and I find I spend most of my time on the 7610, but I do find some of the features of the Flex handy at other times. AM on the Flex (transmit and receive) is far superior, for instance. Graphical filter adjustment is a breeze as well. I would love to see Icom integrate graphical filter on the 7610's screen using the USB mouse on the rig. Lastly, I don't follow the comments about mic gain (one press of the multi-knob gets you there), and the same with the VFO/Memory change (one press of the Quick button gets you there). I have had several Icoms in the past, and still run a couple 7000s for mobile and portable use sometimes, but the menu are quite different on the 7610, yet I find it far easier than most other rigs to use. Long presses of on screen buttons for example take you right where you need quickly without having dedicated HW buttons, and change based on mode. Very handy, IMHO. Press & hold the S-meter to get the to multi-function meter quickly from the large spectrum scope, for example. Press & hold the M. Scope button to get back. Press & hold the AGC on screen button to get to its adjustment screen, and again, press & hold the M. Scope or Exit button to get back. Very easy to navigate around things you need quickly using the touch screen buttons. There may be a lot of short cuts you're missing out on! Thanks again and 73!

      Indeed there is little difference in these top shelf receivers when in use. The 7851 has a slight selectivity advantage. For me that is very slight in my "average ham's" usage patterns. I will say that my preference for the SDR's is in the flatter receive passband. For various reasons, there is more roll-off in the bottom ant top end on the Superhets. There is also a "smoothing' of the audio that happens through stages of superhet. Filter delays etc. all contribute to a less visceral sound once it hits the AF section. To me it's the old 2nd law of thermodynamics at play. We just have less conversions between converting RF energy to AF energy in an SDR. A more direct path results in better system fidelity, I'm looking forward to seeing what ADC etc. Flex has implemented in their new 8000 series. May need to trade-in my Anan 7000 DLE II.

Not trying to be an ass.. just an observation that you might not have had much experience operating the IC-7300.

      Sure "Stuck" on one band. The thing is, if you have a great SWR with a tuner on a long hunk of wire, but nobody can hear you because your transmit efficiency is very poor (AND you are portable with lower power), then what fun are you going to have? A good resonant antenna with a little gain and 20 watts will allow you to have tons of contacts...where a "tuned" multiband antenna will result in very few contacts. This antenna will run on several bands without a tuner, but I would only run 100W using it portable.

      Can't go wrong with the G90. Outstanding radio! An advantage of the FX-4CR is size and portability. If am working with a lightweight resonant antenna in one of the local parks, the FX-4CR seems like a very good choice.

    Very nice video, Bob. I immediately ordered one and received it after 4 days. Are the heat sinks glued on or fixed with screws? From where got you the stands? Are you from Hungary? Nagy means large in English😊. Best 73 KC3CVR, Dietmar, Pittsburgh PA

      I just used carpet double sticky tape at each end and conductive paste in-between. Adding ANY heat sink material conducts enough heat away so it stays OK in any mode of operation. The stands are on Amazon...there are several types- choose what you like. I'm a NY'er living in Arkansas... yes Nagy means BIG. I'm BIG BOB.

    Nice Job of reviewing these radios. I did not understand for sure if the Icom did or did not have a 3rd receive only input. I love that on my FTDX 3000

      Wow, this one was 9 years ago! I have to buy these radios and then sell them off at a loss. i moved over to the Anan 7000 DLE II - which is the best Ham radio made today. (and the new Anan's)

    Thanks for the video. Does this rig have the same clock battery issue that the 7300 has?

      I don't know. If the radio is in storage for a long time, you might have to reset the clock. Out of the 1438 engineering elements they got spot-on, they had to leave at least one thing imperfect. True beauty always has a tiny flaw.
